Pruneo vs Cleaner One Pro: speed, CPU use and price compared
Pick Cleaner One Pro if you want a broader toolbox from a large security company, with a startup manager, file shredder and vulnerability scanner, or if your Mac runs a macOS older than 14. Pick Pruneo if you want a free cleaner that scans much faster, used far less CPU and memory in our test, and lets you undo any cleanup.
Cleaner One Pro, from Trend Micro, is a general Mac cleaner with several extra tools. Pruneo is a free cleaner focused on getting disk space back quickly and safely, including the space taken by development and creative apps.
Both found a similar amount of junk in general use. The big differences we measured are in speed and in how much the app weighs on your Mac while it sits there. Here are the numbers, where Cleaner One Pro is ahead, and how each app handles safety.
The numbers, side by side
| Pruneo 1.0.3 | Cleaner One Pro 6.6.8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Scan time (median warm; first cold scan) | 4.2 s (12.4 s) | 92.9 s (1 min 33 s) |
| Junk to clean, general use | 18.0 GB safe (31.2 GB total) | 17.8 GB (33.5 GB total) |
| Idle CPU | 0.1% | ~52.0% |
| Peak memory while scanning | ~160 MB | 334 MB |
| Installed size | 10.4 MB | 83 MB |
| Helper processes | 0 | 1 |
| Can be undone | Yes, from quarantine | Not verified |
MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro, 16 GB, macOS 27, 10/21/2026. Pruneo 1.0.3, Cleaner One Pro 6.6.8. Median warm scan.
Cleaner One Pro was measured in its App Store version, which has less disk access than the version Trend Micro offers on its own website. The website version may find more, and its numbers could differ.
What the table says, in plain words:
- Scan time. Pruneo’s median warm scan took 4.2 s against 92.9 s for Cleaner One Pro, about 22× faster. On the very first scan, with nothing cached, Pruneo took 12.4 s, about 7× faster.
- Junk found in general use. Close to a tie. Cleaner One Pro found 17.8 GB, and 33.5 GB in total. Pruneo found 18.0 GB that it marks as safe, and 31.2 GB in total once you count what it asks you to review.
- CPU at rest. This is the largest gap in the table. With the app open and idle, Cleaner One Pro used about 52% CPU. We repeated the measurement 3 times, including one run of 28 minutes in a row, and got the same result. Pruneo used 0.1%. We are reporting what we measured on this Mac and this version; we have not looked into why, and results may be different on other setups.
- Memory and size. Peak memory while scanning was about 160 MB for Pruneo and 334 MB for Cleaner One Pro. Installed, Pruneo takes 10.4 MB and Cleaner One Pro 83 MB. In our test Pruneo ran no helper processes in the background (just its menu bar icon); Cleaner One Pro ran 1.
Where Pruneo pulls ahead: professional sections
General use is close. The gap opens with Pruneo’s work sections, which show up based on what you use: Development (projects, Xcode, Node, Python, Docker, local AI, editors), Design, photo and video (Adobe, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, Lightroom, Figma, CapCut) and Music and audio (Logic, Ableton, GarageBand). With those profiles on, Pruneo found 79.2 GB on the same Mac, 40.4 GB of it marked safe, in 7.1 s.
Where Cleaner One Pro wins, and where Pruneo is weaker
- A broader toolbox. Trend Micro’s official page lists Smart Scan, Disk Cleaner, Start Up Manager, App Cleaner and Manager, File Shredder and a Vulnerability Scanner. Pruneo is focused on freeing disk space. It adds a few maintenance tools (a monitor, processes, startup items, DNS cache, Spotlight), but it is not a full suite and has no malware protection. Note that some tools may differ between the website and App Store versions.
- Older Macs. Pruneo needs macOS 14 or later. The App Store listing for Cleaner One Pro says it runs on macOS 10.15 or later, so it covers Macs that Pruneo cannot.
- A large company behind it. Cleaner One Pro comes from Trend Micro, a well-known security company with a long history. Pruneo is a new, small project (current version 1.5.2) with much less time in real use.
- A bit more in the “total” count. Counting everything each app shows, Cleaner One Pro listed 33.5 GB and Pruneo 31.2 GB. The amounts that can be cleaned without review are close: 17.8 GB and 18.0 GB.
Safety and undo
Cleaner One Pro
We did not find information on Trend Micro’s official page about restoring files after a cleanup, so the table says “Not verified”. That means we could not confirm it, not that it is missing. The same page describes its File Shredder as a way to delete sensitive files so they “become impossible to recover”. That is the point of a shredder, so use it only on files you are sure about.
Pruneo
Pruneo marks every item with a traffic light: green is safe, yellow means review it first, and a padlock means it is protected and will not be touched. Everything Pruneo cleans goes to a quarantine first, so you can bring it back. Emptying the Trash is the only exception, and Pruneo asks you to confirm it first.
Pruneo never touches the system, SSH and GPG keys, credentials, Keychain, iCloud Drive, Mail, Messages, .git folders, .env files, certificates, your Photos library, the Docker disk, the root of git projects or the Spotlight index.
From the terminal, you can preview a cleanup before doing it and restore it later:
pruneo scan # see what can be cleaned
pruneo clean <sections> # without --yes it only simulates
pruneo clean <sections> --yes # cleans, and items go to quarantine
pruneo quarantine restore # bring items back from quarantine
Scheduled cleanups only touch green items. More details are on our security page. If you are wondering what is safe to remove by hand, our guide on whether it is safe to delete Library/Caches explains it step by step.
Price
Checked on Oct 22, 2026, in the US stores, in US dollars. Prices change by country and with promotions.
- Cleaner One Pro. In the Mac App Store it is a free download with two in-app purchases named “Unlock Full Version”, at $19.99 and $29.99. The listing does not say the period or the number of devices for each one. Trend Micro’s online store shows one-year subscriptions for 1 device and for 5 devices with a 50% discount, but the amounts did not load when we checked, so we cannot confirm the web price.
- Pruneo. Free, with no account and no subscription. If you want to support the project, there is an optional one-time contribution from $5.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Cleaner One Pro if:

- You want scans that finish in seconds.

- You work with code, video, photos or music and want to reclaim the space those tools leave behind.
- You want a quarantine so any cleanup can be undone.
If you are still deciding, compare Pruneo with CleanMyMac, BuhoCleaner or Mole as well. You can download Pruneo from the home page.
